Understanding Healthcare Quality

Specialist Tiering

For non-Medicare members only, specialist tiering is an important part of the GIC’s interest in addressing rising healthcare costs. UniCare assigns Massachusetts specialty care providers to levels or tiers. All specialists within a practice have the same tier. Members in our Basic, PLUS, and Community Choice plans have lower office visit copays when they see Tier 1 specialists than when they see Tier 2 or Tier 3 specialists. Primary care providers are not subject to the group tiering process.

FAQs about Tiering for Specialty Care Providers

Patient-Centered Primary Care Providers

Through our Enhanced Personal Healthcare program, UniCare works with primary care practices in Massachusetts to help them incorporate the key elements of patient-centered care. Patient-centered care practices are those that have integrated systems of care within their practices to foster the relationship between patients and their primary care providers (PCPs).
