Wellpoint Collaborates With Reliant Medical Group to Support Whole Health, Improve Health Outcomes, and Lower Costs in Central Mass.

February 29, 2024

WOBURN, MASS. – Wellpoint (formerly UniCare) announced it has signed a multi-year agreement with Reliant Medical Group focused on a new care delivery model designed to lower costs and increase value for the people they mutually serve in central Massachusetts.

While Wellpoint and Reliant Medical Group have long partnered on value-based care delivery and quality-based payment models, the new agreement expands that work to include Wellpoint’s advanced value-based care methodology. This represents further progress in moving toward whole health models that align reimbursement with enhanced primary care, improved health outcomes, and reduced cost trends over time.

Clinical leaders from both organizations will also collaborate on reducing unnecessary hospitalizations and closing any potential care gaps for Wellpoint members, especially those with chronic conditions like diabetes. They will also work together to identify ways to expand access to primary care in the region.

“At Wellpoint, we are proactively adopting a whole health model that empowers our members’ health journey and supports their physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being. One of the ways we do this is by rewarding healthcare providers for improving the whole health of our members instead of on the volume of services provided,” said David Morales, general manager of Wellpoint. “We are thrilled to be working closely with Reliant Medical Group to better coordinate care and improve health outcomes for the public servants we mutually serve in central Massachusetts, which will ultimately help lower costs for members and taxpayers.”

Wellpoint administers health benefits for more than 200,000 state and municipal employees, retirees, and their families insured by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Group Insurance Commission.
